My working life in Italy began by providing financial planning services exclusively to employees of, and retirees from, the United Nations based in Rome. It was a culture shock for me and apart from having to play down my Yorkshire accent, I learnt alot about working in a foreign country. However, when the financial crisis hit in 2008/09, a number of things happened which gave me an incentive to diversify my business model, something that I had been thinking about for some time.
I had been aware of and come into contact with many people who had moved to various parts of Italy but who were confused about the tax and financial regime and so I started to take our financial planning services to a wider audience around Italy. I now travel around the country meeting my existing clients, also people who have recently relocated. I also still come in contact with people who have been living here for a number of years but haven’t got their finances sorted yet or Italians who have lived abroad and are returning home.
I speak at events and write for financial columns in a number of local newsletters for the English speaking community in Italy. Over the years I have also managed to keep my local tax and financial knowledge up to date by building a trusted network of professional contacts and also keeping abreast of the ever changing financial landscape in Italy.
