Digital nomad visa in Spain

Who’s this for?
This article is for all British people who have work that can be done remotely and would enjoy living in Spain.

Overview
Digital nomads, start ups and people working for a company outside of Spain can come to live in Spain.

Why to read this article
This simplified visa avoids the 90 days in any 180 days rule for staying in Spain which was introduced after Brexit. It means living in Spain whilst working remotely will be a realistic opportunity for many more of us.

Your Commitment
Taking the time to read the article and requesting an initial phone or Zoom call if you want help for your specific situation.

Spain will introduce a new visa which will allow digital nomads, start ups and employees of companies not in Spain to move to Spain and work remotely. So what is a digital nomad? Oxford Languages define it as follows:

“a person who earns a living working online in various locations of their choosing (rather than a fixed business location).”

This option of “location of their choosing” will include Spain. It is likely to be tremendously appealing to a broad range of people but it may particularly appeal to professionals such as lawyers and accountants, people approaching retirement, business owners and senior executives of public companies.

If you are in one of these groups, or a similar position, there are many planning opportunities available that were not available before. The criteria to qualify are expected to be straightforward. You must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a valid passport
  • Be a self employed person with clients outside Spain
  • Be an employee of a company outside Spain
  • Be an owner of a start up
  • Be able to provide documentation showing at least 80% of your income will come from clients or employment outside of Spain
  • Be able to provide bank statements and proof of medical insurance

The visa will allow you to move to Spain for six months but can be extended for up to three years.

Why would I move to Spain?
I qualify as a member of several of the groups listed above, including a business owner and professional. I am working remotely from my office 300 metres from the sea. As I leave my town I can see the snow capped Pyrenees. My golf is not so good but I enjoy playing and have a choice of four courses within 30 minutes. I play padel, swim every evening during the summer and walk across the mountains of Catalonia. I hope to follow one of the escape routes of the aircrew who were shot down in WWII across the Pyrenees. The food is good, the fiestas are fun and overall life is easier. No wonder I am now in my 16th year of living in Spain! I hope you will soon be able to join me.
